Sadly, no WADAS in 1900

WADAS visited the fort at the end of Brean Down (15.07.07, Absentees: nil) to see the remains of Napoleonic and Second World War defences.

Rail tracks leading off the cliff are evidence of a secret weapon trial not quite as successful or elegant as Barnes Wallis’ bouncing bomb, more the plummeting cart into the sea. However, they demonstrate the pivotal role that Weston played in ruling out the more barking weapon designs in WW2.

More rooms appeared to be open to visitors on this occasion. Some graffiti dating from the 1940’s was discovered by torch-light in an underground chamber that didn’t smell of stale piss. Keen observers did notice, however, a pair of pants and a shirt on the floor.

After the walk Jo and Steve invited the other members of WADAS back to their house for a delicious barbeque.
